Udzungwa National park is a magnificent wildlife sanctuary that is located in central Tanzania between the Iringa and Morogoro regions within the eastern arc mountains, 60 kilometres south of the Mikumi National Park. It covers an area of a total of 1,992 square kilometres comprised of Miombo woodland, grassland, tropical rainforest, and mountain forests.
The park is also a great habitat for an abundance of wildlife and fascinating birdlife. It is a beautiful forest park and a great habitat for various monkeys, including the rare Iringa Red colobus and the Sanje crested manga bush.
Because of the villages, markets and plantations, this is a pleasant change when combined with other safari areas during your Tanzania Safari.
The best time to visit the Udzungwa Mountain National Park is during the dry season which lasts from June to October. Animals can be found gathering around the water sources due to the scarcity of water. Also, the thin vegetation makes wildlife sightings easier.
The Park also has a rainy season which takes place from November to May. The precipitation can make the roads quite slippery and hard to navigate. During the rainy season, visitors can spot the many delightful butterflies thriving within the park.
Dry/High Season (June-October) | Wet/Low Season (November-March) |
---|---|
Game viewing is at its best | Beautiful nature and lively colourful surroundings |
Dry weather makes the skies clear and sunny days | Afternoon and evening thunderstorms |
Morning and evening can be colder | Many roads can be found muddy and hard to explore |
Fewer mosquitoes and insects | Fewer crowds and more private safari experience |
Like other national parks in Tanzania, Udzungwa Mountain National Park is also home to several wildlife species. These include the buffalo, lion, leopard, African wild dogs, eland, Abbott’s duiker, Kipunji and some exceptional animals like grey-faced sengi.
