Tarangire National Park

Covering an area of 2,600 square kilometres, The Tarangire National Park lies between the meadows of the Masaai steppe to the southeast and the Rift Valley Lake to the north and west. The Park got its name from the Tarangire River that flows through the centre of the Park and forms the dry season refuge for wildlife, especially elephants!

Tarangire National Park is impressively splendid for its famous concentration of wild animals, especially numerous elephants. It is also considered one of the finest birding destinations in East Africa. It is a wonderful choice for travellers who want to encounter more animals and fewer tourists while on a Tanzania safari.

Best Time To Visit Tarangire National Park

The best time for an enthralling safari in Tarangire is during the dry season from June to October. During this time, migrant games are found congregating around the swamps and the Tarangire River Valley. The best attraction is the abundance of elephants seen grazing around the water sources. The thin vegetation makes it easier to spot them.

The dry season from November to May also offers the best of birding and photographic safari. During this time the scenery looks lively and vibrant. You can also find a lower cost with a more intimate safari experience.

Some other commonly seen animals are leopards, lions, hyenas and cheetahs which seem to be popular in the southern areas of the park. One of the most rarely seen animals in Tarangire is the wild dog.
