Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Game Reserve is regarded as Africa’s last true wilderness area with an off-the-beaten-path. It is a huge game reserve located in the southeastern corner of Tanzania. It covers an area of around 44,000 square kilometres (17,000 square miles) and is relatively undisturbed by humans.

The property harbours one of the most significant concentrations of elephants, black rhinoceros, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles, amongst many other species.

Apart from that, the reserve also hosts an exceptionally high variety of habitats including Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps, making it a precious place for ongoing ecological and biological processes. This dynamic ecosystem is truly a pride for Tanzania tourism and a best-kept secret to explore by a Tanzania Safari.

Best Time To Visit Selous

Like most of the national parks in Tanzania, the dry season is considered the best time to visit Selous Game Reserve. The dry season runs between June to October making wildlife sighting amazing though it is the busiest time of the year. During this time, you can see the golden savannah with beautiful weather. Animals can be seen gathering around the water sources and the thin vegetation make it easier to spot them. June to August is perfect for tracking rare wild dogs.

November to March is the low rainy season while March to May is considered the long rainy days. These are called the low season but for birding enthusiasts, the wet season is the perfect time for safari in Selous.

Dry/High Season (June-October) Wet/Low Season (November-March)
Amazing wildlife sightings due to thin vegetation and scarce water Spectacular natural views with greenery everywhere
Lovable weather with clear skies and sunny days Afternoon and evening rain showers.
Morning and evening can feel more chilled Some walking trails and roads may find hard to navigate
Fewer mosquitos and insects An exclusive safari experience with fewer visitors
