Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is a magnificent wildlife hub, located in the northeast part of Tanzania on the Kenyan border in the Kilimanjaro and Tanga Region. Previously established as a game reserve, Mkomazi was later gazetted as a national park in 2008. It covers an area of 3,500 square kilometres of grey-green scrubby bushes, savannah woodland and grassland. The park finds itself in a wonderful setting below the verdant slopes of the stunning Usambara and Pare Eastern Arc mountain ranges. The park is also overseen by the iconic peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. By sharing its border with Tsavo National Park, Mkomazi National Park offers a refuge for vulnerable black rhinos and wild dogs. Visit this African hidden treasure and explore the exotic wildlife and scenic nature while going on a Tanzania safari.

Best Time To Visit Mkomazi

Mkomazi National Park can be visited any time of the year like other national parks in Tanzania. But the best time to visit Mkomazi is in the months of June to October. During this time, scarcity of water bound the wildlife to congregate around the waterholes. And the thin vegetation also makes it easier to spot them from very close and clear. Aside from the peak season, the park can also be visited during the wet season between November and May. It is an optimal period for birding safari and photographers’ dreams. You can also be benefited from discounted prices and exclusive safari experiences.

Dry/High Season (June-October) Wet/Low Season (November-March)
Stunning wildlife sightings Dynamic landscape with green and lush vegetables
Beautiful weather with sunny and clear skies. Hardly any rain The ideal time for birding safaris
More crowded experiences Afternoon and evening rain showers
Fewer flees and mosquitos An affordable yet more exclusive safari experiences.

Wildlife At Mkomazi

A large number of animals inhabit this marvellous park and you will encounter them in different parts of the ecosystem. Some commonly seen wildlife in Mkomazi includes elephants, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, giraffes, black rhinos, lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, beisa oryx and fringe-eared oryx. Mkomazi National Park is a sanctuary for endangered rhinos and they are seen spending their day and nights grazing. They only sleep during the hottest parts of the day, when they are only like a cooling mud soak. Apart from the wildlife species, Mkomazi is also home to a healthy population of 450 bird species. The most commonly seen species are Ostriches, long-crested eagles and bustards.

Activities to do in Mkomazi

Mkomazi National Park offers interesting game drives which are best done in the early morning and afternoon on a daily basis. Going on an early game drive safari, you can find amazing views of predators roaming on the plain. With the afternoon game drive, you can spot wildlife grazing in the open grassland. Another exciting way to spot wildlife in their natural habitat is through the guided nature walk. Though a few destinations in Tanzania offer a guided walk, in Mkomazi you will be allowed to get out of the safari vehicle and explore the place on foot. Birding safari is also a great activity to do in Mkomazi National Park as the park has a good concentration of birdlife. It is best done in the early morning and late evenings with an experienced guide.
