The remote yet scenically beautiful Mahale Mountain National Park is located in the western region of Tanzania, on the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika. This area is a magnificent natural cocktail of green mountains, rainforests, grassland and woodlands along with clear blue waters, and a variety of animal species. Mahale Mountain National Park is originally created to protect the thousands of chimpanzees that inhabit the region. The park is also famed for its stunning sunsets over Lake Tanganyika which makes it a great stopover for keen photographers during Tanzania Safari.
Arusha National Park is worth visiting throughout the year. But to ensure the amazing wildlife viewing, you need to know about the best time of the year when the park is at its best. So, this is the dry season that runs between June and October, also considered the high season. You will see animals gathering around the waterholes and the thin vegetation makes it easier to spot them. Though the dry season is the best time to visit Arusha, the wet season (November to May) has also a unique advantage. You will see nature like a new bride decorated with green colour. Though this is considered the low season, bird watching is magical. Apart from that you will also get some intimate Tanzania Safari experience at a discounted price.
Dry/High Season (June-October) | Wet/Low Season (November-March) |
---|---|
Best time for chimpanzee tracking | Best time for photographic and birding safaris |
Mild weather and sunny sky with hardly any rain. | The weather remains humid during the wet season |
More crowded safari experiences | Lower slopes become slippery and muddy due to heavy rains |
Fewer mosquitoes and a comparatively safe safari experience | Less crowded safari experiences with affordable prices |
Similar to the Gombe National Park in the north, Mahale Mountains NP also boasts a group of chimpanzees with a population of 800 species. So while visiting this park, you will see the chimpanzees lurking in the trees. In addition to chimpanzees, the park also provides shelters for diverse wildlife including red colobus, blue monkeys and visually dynamic forest birds. Also, you can see over 400 varied tropical fish species in the mighty Tanganyika.
Though the Mahale Mountains is an optimal safari spot for chimpanzee sightings, there are also other activities to do here. You can also engage in fishing, snorkelling, boating to simply relaxing in your private accommodation. The park is only accessible via air or boat trip as there are no roads crossing through the park. So this is a breathtaking experience to get into the park. Also, the walking safari is one of the adventurous activities to do in the Mahale Mountains. It guarantees you the best safari experience through the wild.
