Lake Eyasi is a gorgeous, shallow soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa. It is located about 75 kilometres from the Ngorongoro Crater and 100 kilometres from the Serengeti. This most isolated region is seldom visited by travellers and is home to the ancient Hadzabe Bushman and Datoga Tribe. In contrast to the other savannah plains of the northern region, Lake Eyasi offers tall palm trees along its beautiful shores and a variety of avifauna. We recommend visiting this iconic water source of Africa on a Tanzania Safaris.
Lake Eyasi is a year-round admirable choice due to its impulsive water levels. But to get some of the great experiences, the best time should be considered. Lake Eyasi changes dramatically with the seasons and gives its best views according to this. You might experience a wonderland of hundreds of birds or a strangely dry landscape. June to October is generally considered the best time to visit Lake Eyasi. However, the whole of Northern Tanzania is best for wildlife sightings, with clear, sunny skies and little chance of rain. But Lake Eyasi almost completely dries out during this time, although it’s still impressively photogenic. The lake also experiences two rainy seasons which transform the surrounding region into lush green vegetables. The short rainy season is from November to December and the long rainy season is from March to May.
Dry/High Season (June-October) | Wet/Low Season (November-March) |
---|---|
Easy wildlife sighting | Landscapes look vibrant with lush vegetables |
Lovely weather with mild temperatures and hardly any rain | Short afternoon and evening rain showers. |
A more crowded safari experience | Best time for birding safari |
Fewer mosquitoes and insects | Walking trails and roads may effect by heavy rains |
While Lake Eyasi doesn’t support the big game wildlife population, it is a paradise for birding enthusiasts. The shallow water supports a large diversity of breeding water birds from June to November including huge populations of flamingos and pelicans. Apart from that, African spoonbills, Fischer’s lovebirds, grey-headed gulls, pied avocet, spurfowl, stork, barbet, weaver and many others can be seen around the shores of Lake Eyasi. Another great sighting is the hippos at Lake Eyasi which are found easily while on your Tanzania Safari. The lake provides them shelter to avoid the hot sun during the dry months. Other wildlife species also can be seen surrounding the region.
The Hadzabe bushman, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherers in Africa lives in the region around Lake Eyasi. So, a visit to their region is worthwhile and you will get to know about their ancient cultures and way of living. Learn the unique trick of making fire and preparing their food. Aside from that, there are many other activities to do in Lake Eyasi. You can also go on walking safaris along the lake and see the locals fishing.
