Kilwa

Kilwa, originally known as Kilwa Kisiwani is a coastal region on the Indian Ocean. It is a national historic site and hamlet community located in the township of Kilwa Masoko around 300 kilometres from Dar es Salaam. The Island is divided into various small settlements including Kilwa Masoko, Kivinje and Kisiwani with Sanje Ya Kiti and Sango Mnara. In past years, Kilwa Kisiwani was established as a port of the Swahili civilization at the start of the 9th century and later became a busy and wealthy commercial centre. This was also the meeting place for traders travelling in Africa and carting commodities from regions neighbouring Tanganyika at that time. To have an authentic experience on this Island, Tanzania Safari is the way to go. Kilwa Masoko is a foremost town in the Kilwa district of Lindi and still has a busy and lively market. It contains tranquil and stunning beaches and is home to many fishing communities in the region.

Best Time To Visit kilwa

The best time to visit Kilwa Kisiwani is during the dry season from June to October, though the region enjoys a tropical climate all year round. Between these months the climate remains very good with an average of 23°C in the morning. There is hardly any rain and you can see lots of sunshine. Apart from that the region also experiences two rainy seasons: the short rainy season from November to February and the long rainy season between March and May. Though these are the low seasons, the safari experience is not yet disappointing at all.

Activities to do in kilwa

Kilwa Island lies directly opposite the well-visited mainland port of Kilwa Masoko. You can visit that port which takes about 10 minutes by motorboat, or anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes by dhow, depending on wind conditions.
