Mafia Island: The name “Mafia” is derived from the Swahili “mahali pa afya,” which means “a healthy dwelling-place, Mafia Island is Tanzania’s most culturally unique and environmentally natural of the Indian Ocean islands, visited by a select few who recognize its allure and want a unique trip. The main advantage of visiting Mafia as a visitor is that everything is so easily open and inexpensive.
Mafia is a genuine underwater paradise with some of the world’s most diverse reefs. The island is known as the coral garden of East Africa because of the abundance of groupers, clownfish, octopus, rays, turtles, and whale sharks that frequent the warm, clear waters. The Mafia Island Marine Park was established in 1995 to safeguard the archipelago’s reefs as well as the archipelago’s more than 460 fish species.
Early morning pick up from the hotel at 5:30 a.m. then drive to the airport in Zanzibar, then drive to have some times for coffee then the check inn begins and 6:45 a.m. flight depart from Zanzibar at 7:30 a.m. which take 30 minutes straight flight to mafia Airport. After landing you will be picked up from the airport and driven to the port where you will be able to change before starting the tour in the indian ocean enjoy your whale shark excursion.
We are the first boat to leave, which gives us the best chance of finding the sharks first, so please be mindful of managing your time. Here, you’ll be fitted for your snorkeling gear while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea before heading out on the boat. We do not have a fixed time for our tour as the search time and spotting vary, but it usually takes between 2-5 hours. Experienced guides will brief you on the procedures and safety precautions for swimming with the sharks as well as direct and assist you in the water. Snacks and water will be provided on the boat to keep you fueled for all the swimming, which can feel like quite the workout! Once you’ve worked up more of an appetite, we’ll head back to Afro Beach where you’ll enjoy a fresh, authentic BBQ lunch. From there, you’ll have the chance to explore the town of Kilindoni, Mafia Island’s capital, before returning to the airport to catch your flight to Zanzibar.
